Surprise Cake for Christmas or Special Day

Surprise Cake for Christmas or Special Day

With a fun heart that appears when you cut it, make this surprise cake for Valentine's Day!
Whether you call it a surprise cake or a flowing cake, it really is a fun little treat to make for any vacation! I have wanted to make one of these cakes for a long time, so I decided to take the plunge one day during the nap.
I learned some tips along the way that I will share with you in the directions of the recipe!
  • Kitchen supplies
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Two baking molds
  • Spoon
  • Heart shaped cookie cutter
  • Bread pan

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes of cake mix
  • as well as any additional ingredients according to the instructions
  • 1 container of frosting

Instructions

  1. Start by making a box of cake mix according to the instructions. Add about 10 to 15 drops of food coloring to the dough to make it pink. Cook at the time and time indicated on the box.
  2. Let the cake cool completely, then using the cookie cutter, start cutting the hearts out of the cake.
  3. This is where I made my mistake. I cut all the hearts and placed them directly in the bread pan. After some research, this is not what you want to do! I share the "right way" to do it next.
  4. Prepare the second can of cake mix and pour a little dough into the loading tray, no more than about 1/4 full. THEN place your heart cake cutouts in the dough. The reason is that it will raise the hearts in the cake so that you can see them better when you cut the cake.
  5. After placing all of your cutouts in the bread pan, use the rest of the cake batter to cover them. The other thing I learned ... the cake could spill out a bit. To avoid this stinky burning smell when it drips onto the bottom of your oven, place a cookie sheet on the lower rack to catch the drops.
  6. Cook according to the directions on the box… I found that I needed to add about 10 more minutes of cooking to mine. After the recommended time, simply check the baking in the middle of the cake to see if it needs to be baked longer.
  7. Once the cake has cooled, glaze and decorate as desired. And if you're wondering what to do with the rest of the pink cake ... make some bite-size pieces of cake!
